Today Europe is spiritually the darkest continent in the world. In Asia,
Africa, and South America there are spiritual revivals taking place. Even in
places like India or Pakistan where religions like Hinduism and Islam are
predominant people believe that everything in this life has a connection to
the spiritual realm. Europe, however, is largely secular with little thought
of anything outside of the material world. While materially affluent, most
Europeans are spiritually bankrupt.

In Great Britain (the land of Knox, Whitfield, Wesley, Carey, and Spurgeon)
there are millions of people who have no idea who Jesus Christ really is and
therefore do not know the Gospel. Over the last ten years British church
attendance has declined by almost 25 per cent. If this rate of decline
continues, the British church will not exist as it was known in the
twentieth century.
The population of Britain is approximately 59,000,000. It consists of four
kingdoms (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). The capital is
London with a population of 11,800,000 people. About 75% of the population
consider themselves Church of England with about 11% professing to be Roman
Catholic. There are now more active members of the Roman Catholic Church
(1,722,000) than the Church of England (1,280,000). If current trends
continue, within the next decade there will be more Muslims attending
worship in mosques than there are people regularly attending worship in the
Church of England. Only about 2% of the population would be considered
Evangelical (born again) Christians.
Today in Britain, this Gospel light is growing seriously dim and is in
danger of being blown out. It is time for us to realise that Britain is a
mission field. We call this “Project Nehemiah”, because when Nehemiah heard
the news of the desolation of Jerusalem and of the spiritual poverty of his
people, he began to weep and to cry out to God. Today, Christians need to be
deeply moved over the spiritual state of Great Britain. Without reserve,
British and North American Christians need to take up the challenge of the
Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20). We need to begin spiritually rebuilding
the walls of this great nation!
